Charles Douglas Weist, 81, of Traverse City passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Doug was born on July 30, 1935 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late David and Kathryn (Hamilton) Weist. Doug married the love of his life, Evelyn Habrecht on June 10, 1961 in Detroit.
He was a proud graduate of Michigan State University. While at MSU Doug was a member of the Glee Club, editor for the student news, and a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He graduated with a B.A. in Journalism. Doug had been employed with American Electric Power as Land Management Supervisor. While with AEP Doug served with Ohio Power Company as well as Indiana Michigan Power, and retired after 32 years of service. Doug was a talented artist and loved sports. He sketched many athletes, and 26 of his drawings are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City. He was also a member of the Elks. He loved music, barber shop quartets, and he sang in the church choir.
Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Evelyn, and two sons, Kenneth Weist of Maryland and Pastor Jim Weist of Florida. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Nickolas, Benjamin, Tianna, Camden and Riley; we will miss him dearly.
A Funeral Service honoring Doug will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017, with visiting between 12:00-1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1003 S. Maple St., Traverse City, 49684. Rev. Robert Zagore will officiate. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
