Obituary

CEDAR — Cheryl Lynn Petroskey, a lifelong local resident passed away at home Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, following an extended illness.Born Oct. 23, 1956, in Traverse City, she was the youngest child of Claude and Laura (Sharnowski) Czerniak, of Maple City.Cheryl attended Glen Lake High School, was a cheerleader and member of the National Honor Society, and graduated in 1974.Following graduation, she was employed as an office assistant for Kasson Sand & Gravel; a secretary at the Leland County Courthouse; Executive Secretary for the Northwest Michigan Manpower Consortium; and as office manager for Czerniak Masonry. She also served two terms as Solon Twp. Clerk.On Sept. 10, 1977, Cheryl was married to the love of her life, Larry Petroskey, at Holy Rosary Church, and resided in Cedar until her death.Cheryl enjoyed boating and snowmobiling. Her hobbies included collecting Precious Moments figurines, Beanie Babies, Boyd's Bears and collectable Christmas ornaments. She also loved sending and receiving cards of support from her many friends and family, and was forever grateful for the many gifts of flowers, kind thoughts, words and prayers she received that touched her life during the time of her illness.Her greatest joys were raising her children, and the time spent with her family, especially her nieces and nephews and their children.Cheryl is survived by her husband, Larry; her son, Brad who resides in Bristow, Va.; and daughter, Sara, who resides in Portland, Maine. Also surviving are her parents, Claude and Laura (Sharnowski) Czerniak; two sisters, Claudette (Frank) Winowiecki, Carolyn (Robert) Noonan; brother, Claude Jr. "Sonny" (Bernie) Czerniak; five godchildren; and many nieces and nephews and their children.She was preceded in death by an infant son, Nicholas Ryan, "Our Angel in Heaven."Visitation will take place this evening, Aug. 23, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a Wake Service at 7 p.m., at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, with visitation from 10:30 a.m. until the time of Mass, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald Libby and The Rev. Ken Stachnik will co-celebrate.
