Obituary

Chester Robey Hyland Jr., age 95, peacefully passed away on October 1, 2023, in Traverse City, surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Chester was born on November 12, 1927, in Oak Park, Illinois, as an only child to the late Chester and Violette (Wraith) Hyland Sr. He bravely served his country during World War 2 in the United States Army during the occupation in Japan, having been honorably drafted out of high school. After his military service, Chester pursued his passion for baseball, playing in the minor league for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was an avid sports enthusiast, with a special love for baseball, particularly the Chicago Cubs.

Dedicated to public service, Chester worked for the United States Postal Service in Wheaton, IL until his retirement in 1987. Following his retirement, he relocated to Traverse City to be closer to his cherished family. Chester was not only a man of dedication but also of deep faith, being active in the Rockford, IL Evangelical Free Church and Bethany Baptist Church in Traverse City.

In his 74 years of marriage, Chester shared a bond of unwavering love and commitment with his beloved wife, a relationship that spanned over 80 years, having met during their teenage years in the youth group. His family meant the world to him, and he found immense joy in their company and in exploring the world through travel. Chester's great sense of humor endeared him to everyone he met, leaving behind fond memories for all who knew him.

Chester is survived by his wife Janet, his son Timothy (Kathy) Hyland of Traverse City, Karen (Roger) Cobb of Delavan, WI, his grandchildren, Michael Hyland, Lauren (Keef) Morgan, Jessica Bogart, Terra (Tina) Bogart, and Joshua Hyland, great-grandchildren Broderick, Lukas, Wesley, Kelly, Louisa and Odin along with several other friends and family members.

A graveside service to honor Chester's life will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 2 PM at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be directed to TEAM, The Evangelical Alliance Mission: PO Box 1683 Carol Stream, IL 60132

In the quiet of his passing, we remember Chet Hyland, a beloved husband, father, and friend, whose legacy of love and laughter will forever remain in our hearts.
