It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Christine "Chris" Ann Hoben, aged 75, who passed away early in the morning of April 1, 2025, in Traverse City, MI. She was born on June 9, 1949, in Adrian, MI, to Richard and Jean (Ansorge) Hoben.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Jack Berry; her siblings, Michael Hoben of Clearwater, FL, Catherine Hoben of Peoria, AZ, Mary Hoben of Kalamazoo, MI, and Richard Hoben of Grandville, OH; her stepdaughters, Andrea Berry-Murphy of Phoenix, AZ, and Kathryn Berry of Roseville, MI; her grandchildren, Megan Murphy, Drake Berry, and Andrew Murphy; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Elise Hoben; and her niece, Katie Hoben.
Chris graduated from Central Michigan University in 1971, where she was an outstanding member of the women's golf team. Her career in education began in Addison, MI, where she taught social studies and coached girls' sports. After receiving her master's degree from Michigan State University, she transitioned from teaching to school administration, serving as Assistant Principal at Highland Elementary School and later as Principal at Milford Middle School. Former students would recognize her for her bright smile and thank her for making a difference in their lives.
Chris lived with a spirit of independence, strong opinions, and great wit and humor. She found a life-long devoted partner when she married Jack. Together, they shared adventures and lots of laughs. She cared deeply for her extended family, friends, and community.
Chris was an avid golfer who could belt a long drive from the "men's" tees. She organized the "Hoben Open," which brought together generations of Hobens and friends to celebrate their shared love of golf. After retiring from education, Chris began a second career on the golf course, working at Elmbrook Golf Course and the Grand Traverse Resort. She loved "telling people what to do and where to go—and taking money for it!"
Chris was also an adventurous traveler throughout her life. She bicycled around Ireland, rode a camel in Gibraltar, rode trains throughout Europe and Russia, and hiked a volcano in Hawaii.
She will be remembered as a loving curator of family mementos, an avid sales shopper, and a collector of artwork, hats, and shoes.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 12pm – 4pm, at Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort, 4050 E. Hammond Rd, Traverse City, MI 49686. If you plan to attend, please RSVP by emailing
