Robert James "Jim" Beck, a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and devoted father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2024.
He was born on May 14, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Elizabeth Waybright and Elwood Beck. He was a loving husband to his first wife, Wendy, and his current wife, Gail, and a devoted father to Tim and Brandon Beck.
Colonel Jim Beck served in the United States Air Force for 24 years, with many of those years as a B-52 pilot. His career was defined by his unwavering commitment to his country, exemplary leadership, and dedication to service. As a pilot, he flew countless missions and mentored many younger officers. His service was honored with numerous awards and commendations, and his legacy as a leader in the Air Force is an enduring one. Jim Beck retired with the rank of Colonel, leaving behind a legacy of Integrity, courage, and conviction.
Jim received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University. Next earning his Master's degree from Central Michigan for which he was very proud of these educational accomplishments.
Beyond his military career, Jim was known for his engaging personality, talented storytelling, bright intellect, embrace of life and laughter, and his love for family, golf and a wee dram on the deck. He had a passion for college football and was always eager to share his knowledge and experiences with those around him. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Beck; children and grandchildren: Tim & Brandyn Beck (Zoe), Brandon & Kelly Beck (Ethan, Lila), Kristine & Benjamin Cook (Alyssa, Makayla, Jacob), Lindsey & Ryan Scranton (Charlotte, Lucy), Jeff Caskey (Adrielle); brothers: Gary (Kelly) Harrison, Robin (Beth) Harrison; and many beloved great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Wendy Beck; his parents: Elwood & Elizabeth (Waybright) Beck; and his step-father, Robert Harrison, whom he was very close to.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St. Traverse City. A funeral service, with military honors, will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m., also at the funeral home. All are welcome to attend a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Frankfort, MI. In lieu of flowers, consider donation to Grand Traverse County Veterans Affairs, (231) 995-6070.
