Cynthia Jo (Johns) Loomis
Traverse City – Cynthia Loomis, 61, formerly of Traverse City, passed away January 22, 2017 in Warren, Michigan.
Cindy was born on June 27, 1955 in Highland Park, Michigan to James Leonard Johns and Joyce Elaine (Loftus) Johns. She moved to Traverse City at age 15, and graduated from Traverse City Senior High School in 1973. Cindy met the love of her life, Tom Loomis, while working at Montgomery Ward. They were married at All Faiths Chapel on August 27, 1977.
Together with Tom, Cindy raised two beautiful daughters, Hillary and Chelsea. She encouraged education, strong work ethic and kindness to others above all else. Cindy was a consistent support figure through countless extracurricular activities (especially band and cross-country/track), taking the family on adventures across the Midwest. She took great pride in both Hillary and Chelsea graduating from the University of Michigan, especially because attending college was something she had always aspired for herself. Cindy loved planning their weddings, and welcomed her two supportive son-in-laws (and their families) with open arms. She adored her four grandchildren, and lived for family gatherings and holidays. Her family already misses her dearly.
After sacrificing her early adulthood for her family, she returned to school, graduating with a certificate in accounting from Oakland Community College in 2011. She reentered the workforce and began a successful second career at Quicken Loans as a mortgage underwriter, where her attention to detail and ambition made her a valuable employee and led to several promotions in a short period. Cindy was looking forward to retirement with Tom in a few years time, and had many dreams for the future with her children and grandchildren.
Cindy loved to garden. She made the most of spring through fall, constantly working outside with Tom to improve their home, and the homes of others. Hillary and Chelsea will greatly miss her expert gardening advice and natural knack for landscape design. Other fond family memories include times spent at Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, Lake Michigan beaches, and bonfires listening to Country Gold Saturday Night. She also loved animals, and her dachshund, Izzy Belle, in particular. Izzy was a constant companion and snuggle buddy, helping to fill the void of empty-nest syndrome.
Cindy is survived by her husband Thomas, with whom she would have celebrated 40 years of marriage this coming August, daughters Dr. Hillary (David) Loomis-King and Chelsea (Kachi) Aguwa; her four grandchildren, Christian, Louisa, Alexander, and Margaret; her siblings, Jennifer Olson, Jim (Sonya) Johns Jr., Kathie (Steve) VanderWall, Cary Johns, and many nieces and nephews; Tom's siblings, Sharon Loomis, Ed Loomis, and Bill (Stephanie) Loomis; and her step father-in-law, Gary Brown.
Cindy was preceded in death by her father Jim, her mother Joyce, and her mother-in-law Leila Brown.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 5 to 8 pm at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 11:00 am with visitation beginning one hour prior, also at the funeral home.
