Dallas George Smith, 86, of Traverse City, Michigan passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026 at his home. Dallas was born on June 3, 1940 in Flint, Michigan to the late James and Velma Smith. He spent his first 30 years in Flint, where he taught elementary school and later became the Math and Science Instructional Specialist. He married his first wife, Ruth Weirauch and together they had a son, Mike Smith.

Dallas later moved to Honor, Michigan. He built his first home in early 1970, which included his extensive model railroad layout in the basement. He continued teaching, later became an Elementary School Principal, then a Junior High School Principal and finally Director of Services for Benzie County Central School district.

He served for 36 years on the Homestead Township Fire Department as a volunteer fire fighter.

Dallas married Joanne Gangler on January 29, 1983. In 1983, he learned to fly, he enjoyed his plane and taking Jo for their famous $50 hamburgers. Dallas and Jo moved to Duck Lake. Together they enjoyed lake life, entertaining family, fishing and playing cards with special friends, Joe and Elaine Flees.

Being snowbirds in Punta Gorda, Florida, Dallas and Jo spent almost 20 years at Gulf View RV Resort sharing the winter season with many near and dear friends.

Dallas had many passions throughout his life, camping, traveling, cocktail hours (with a Jack and diet). He played in several golf leagues at both Crystal Lake and Interlochen golf courses. He loved to build and fix things, especially helping others with their repair projects.

Dallas shared his love with his dogs too. Time with Flash, Goober, Radar, Kramer, Lucky, Shadow, Rudy and Teddy brought him tremendous joy.

Dallas is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Joanne, his son Mike (Norma) Smith, a brother, Darryl Smith, a sister, Deb (Ken) Demming and his beloved dog, Teddy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Velma Smith, his first wife, Ruth and a sister-in-law, Sally Smith.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caring staff of Hospice of Michigan.

A Memorial Service honoring Dallas will take place at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City, Michigan 49684.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to the Cherryland Humane Society, Benzie County Central Schools or Hospice of Michigan.
