Daniel Michael Dyer

July 6, 1947 — May 28, 2026

Daniel Michael Dyer, otherwise known as “Ma”, 78, of Old Mission Peninsula, passed away May 28, 2026, in the home he loved.

Dan was born on July 6, 1947, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Willard “Bill” and Betty Jean (Fate) Dyer. He grew up in Grand Rapids. After graduating from Rogers High School, Dan proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was boots on the ground from 1967 through 1968, including a 13-month tour in Vietnam, and later completed his service as a drill sergeant at Fort Bragg, NC.

Upon returning home, Dan met the love of his life, Cynthia Louise Mikesell, on a blind date at a golf course. After a short courtship, they were married on July 22, 1972, at Ogdensburg Church. Together they raised two wonderful Children.

Dan worked in the furniture industry at Steelcase for 30 years, where he held a variety of roles and earned a reputation as a hardworking and dedicated employee. He finished his career in the fabric center, taking great pride in ensuring the quality and perfection of his work.

A devoted father, Dan cherished his children, Jeff and Caroline. He coached Caroline’s youth softball teams and was always their biggest supporter. In his younger years, Dan enjoyed hunting, tennis, softball—playing on a team known as the Golden Tops—and bowling with his league with family and friends at Wengers. He was also an involved member of the Old Mission American Legion Post, serving as commander and as vice commander over many years.

Affectionately known as “Ma,” Dan earned his nickname because he looked out for everyone like family. He always made sure his friends stayed out of trouble and never hesitating to tell it like it was.

After retiring from Steelcase in 2002, Dan and Cindy moved to Old Mission Peninsula, where he built the home he was so proud of. He helped finish the basement himself, carefully treated the wood, and took great joy in maintaining his property. Dan LOVED mowing his lawn, polishing his Corvette, enjoying the views from his porch, and spending time playing games with his family. He especially enjoyed Scrabble. Just last weekend, he proudly won two out of three games with his family.

Above all, Dan was a family man. His greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren, who loved him dearly. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia; his son, Jeff; his daughter, Caroline (Tim) Hibma; his grandchildren, Devin Dyer, Lea (Luc Drew) Dyer, Camerin Hibma, and Jace Hibma; his siblings, David Dyer and Diana (John) Kalee, along with many other loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers-in-law, Jeffrey and Jerry Mikesell.

A gathering to celebrate Dan’s life will be held July 11, 2026 from 3-6 pm at 4629 Tenth St, Wayland, MI 49348 . A private burial will take place with military honors at Ogdensburg Cemetery at a later time. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Old Mission American Post 399.
