Traverse City - Daniel Joseph Kiessel, 70, passed away peacefully at home July 1, 2017 after a long illness; born May 19, 1947 in Lake Leelanau to Carl Rufus Kiessel and Viola Mary Reicha.
Dan married his high school sweet heart Gale M. Poulin on June 15, 1968 at St. Mary's Church in Lake Leelanau.
Dan's greatest joy was his family and friends especially his grandchildren. He worked as a machinist most of his life and enjoyed officiating many of the sports played in the Grand Traverse Area. He was active in the UAW and United Way. Dan was very instrumental in getting the Blood Mobile started in the Grand Traverse Region and served as its first co-chairman.
Dan is survived by his wife Gale; daughter Lisa (Mike) Byrne of Novi; son Jeff (Michelle) Kiessel of Ludington; grandchildren Abby, Quentin, Adeline and Ava Byrne; Sydney and Norah Kiessel; sister Florence Bowlby of Livonia; brother Bud (Gerri) Kiessel of Surprise, AZ; brother-in-law James Poulin of Traverse City; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Ruth Earl, Joann (Dick) Anderson; brother-in-law Dr. James Bowlby; mother-in-law Clara (Don) Crain; sisters-in-law Karen Annis and Bonnie Shea.
Those who wish to honor his memory may do so by making a donation to Hospices of Michigan, Area Agency on Aging or Commission on Aging. Dan's family wants to thank everyone who helped in his care.
Per Dan's wishes, cremation has taken place and the family will celebrate his life privately.
