Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG — David C. Block, 87, of Williamsburg, passed away Aug. 24, 2011, at Munson Hospice House. David was born on June 3, 1924, in Howard City, to the late Otto and Clarice (Medler) Block. From 1940 to 1942, David attended Davis Tech.In 1943 David answered the call of our nation and joined the United States Marines. He faithfully served until he was honorably discharged in March of 1946. Upon returning from the war he began his career as an Optician after being certified. He retired after practicing for 43 years in Michigan. David was president of the Opticians Association of Michigan, received the Optician of the Year Award in 1984 and was editor of the Michigan Optical News. Dave served on the Advisory Committee of the Optometry Program at Ferris State University from 1985 to 1989. David was also a past commander of the American Legion in Howard City and a member of the American Legion Bowen Holiday Post #35. In his spare time David enjoyed traveling, golfing, woodworking and reading. He also found great enjoyment leading the singing at the all faith services for the past 10 years at Hope Village. David was also a proud supporter of the Detroit Tigers and the Michigan State University Spartans. David was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald Block; grandsons, Jason Block and Michael Grobben; sister, Doris Hyde; and first wife, Phyllis Lindquist. David is survived by his wife of 38 years, Marceline; daughter, Carol (John) Volpi; son, Larry (Beverly) Block; grandchildren, Amber (Brian) Spooner and Steven (Anne) Grobben; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marcena (Keith) Smith; niece, Vanessa Smith; nephew, Brian (Lisa) Smith; great-niece, Ashley; great-nephew, Adam; and special friend, Grace Zielinski. A service of celebration for David's life will be held Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at 11 a.m., with visitation to begin at 10 a.m., at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at a later date in Roselawn Cemetery in Saginaw. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice House or to the Williamsburg United Methodist Church Women's Fellowship.
