David Glenn Gilbert, 75 of Traverse City passed away Monday, May 26, 2014 at his home.

Dave was born on March 15, 1939 in Arcadia, MI to the late Eldred and Norma (Lemley) Gilbert. He married Sandra J. Nelson on July 2, 1960 at the Central Methodist Church in Traverse City.

Dave honorably served our country in the United States Navy as an engineer. Upon returning from the service he worked several years for Cherryland Rural Electric and eventually retired from Traverse City Light and Power as a lineman. Dave was a member of the Grawn United Methodist Church and a devoted Tigers fan. Fishing, hunting at deer camp, traveling and camping were some of Dave's favorite pastimes. Dave enjoyed puttering around the barn and his yard and especially relaxing on his front porch. Most importantly he loved his family and his grandchildren truly were the light of his life. Dave will be remembered for his devoted work ethic and family values. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Surviving Dave is his wife Sandra of 53 years, children, Tammy (Dan) Harrigan, David Gilbert, Greg (Lori) Gilbert, Ward (Terri) Freeman, grandchildren, Justin (Lisa) Gilbert, Nicholas (Brittney) Gilbert, Michelle Gilbert, Mallory Gilbert, Shanley Harrigan, Caitlin Harrigan, David R.(Jessica) Gilbert, Jonathon Gilbert, great grandchildren, Kendall, Arthur, and Tristan, brothers, Clyde (Lenna) Gilbert, Eldred Gilbert, Robert (Doris) Gilbert, mother-in-law Lucille Nelson, his beloved pets Molly and Boots, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law Bill Nelson.

A Memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 11am with a visitation from 10-11am at the Central United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mary Brown and the Rev. Eugene Baughan will co-officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grawn United Methodist Church.
