David George
Knowles
September 9, 1952 – May 2, 2026
David George Knowles, 73, passed away on May 2, 2026, at his home in Traverse City, Michigan, surrounded by family.
David was born on September 9, 1952, in Traverse City to Harry “Porter” Knowles and Margaret Louise Knowles. Though Traverse City was where his story began, it was far from the only place he called home. He served in the United States Navy and later worked as a civilian contractor, traveling the world and building a life full of stories, friendships, and experiences that stretched far beyond any one place.
He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and found joy in the simple things. Whether he was fishing, smoking a cigar, or playing a round of bingo with his favorite coral dauber in hand, David was content. Trucks were one of his favorite hobbies, especially his two 1939 Chevy trucks, which he poured time and effort into and drove whenever he had the chance. He had a story for every moment and a willingness to share it, leaving an impression on everyone lucky enough to listen. His travels brought him friends across the globe, too many to name, but each one meaningful.
David is survived by his children, Amy (Jerry) Sattory of Muskegon, Michigan, and Roger, Porter, and Luke Knowles of Minnesota; his grandchildren, Paige (Hank) Steffes of Zeeland, Michigan, and Rae Sattory of Muskegon, Michigan; his siblings, Margaret (Sue) Chapman of Charlevoix, Michigan, and Jon Knowles of Traverse City, Michigan; and his niece, Blaire (Brad) Noren of Muskegon, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry “Porter” Knowles and Margaret Louise Knowles, and his nephew, Spencer Knowles.
He was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held at a later date.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Heartland Hospice for their compassion and care in his final days.
