Obituary

David Frayne Koch, 86, of Lake Ann passed away surrounded by family. David was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late William Edward and Ruth Augusta (Crittenden) Koch. After graduating from Southwestern High School in Detroit in 1956, he served in the U.S. Navy and then joined IBM as a Customer Engineer from which he retired in the 1980's.

In his early retirement years, David applied his intellectual curiosity and advanced engineering skills to the construction of his own home in Lake Ann, where David and the love-of-his-life, Judy (Van Dam) Koch, resided after moving from Rochester Hills. David was a founding member of Safe Harbor long before it had a name, securing safe places for people to sleep in three area churches. He also helped with a local animal rescue group, now known as PetSafe, often bringing the animals to his home to foster while finding them permanent homes.

In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, biking, woodworking, fishing, and traveling by RV across North America. David's dogs and grandchildren brought him great joy.

David is survived by his wife of 45 years, Judy Koch; sisters, Kathleen (the late Robert) Mulligan and Virginia Koch; daughters, Ruth Charlebois (Mark), Beth Burk (Brad), Rebecca Ankley (Matt), son Scott Koch (Judy), grandchildren, Ethan Ankley, Megan (Charlebois) Linegar, Eliza Burk and Aaron Burk, nieces, nephews and other extended family.

David was predeceased by his daughter Dana Marie Koch, his parents, and his best friend and biking pal Mike Galigan.

David's memorial service will be held on Saturday May 18, 2024 at the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, located at 701 Westminster Road, at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, please a consider a donation to Habitat for Humanity in David's honor.
