David Scott

May 11, 1945 — Oct 19, 2026

David Martin “Marty” Scott was born May 11, 1945, in Traverse City, Michigan, and passed away October 19, 2026, at Medilodge in Suttons Bay, Michigan.

Marty graduated from Northport High School in 1963 and married Cherry Lee Nelson in December 1964. He enlisted in the United States Army, where he attained the rank of sergeant in the Military Police Corps and served in Germany during the Vietnam era.

Marty and Cherry began their family in Germany, where their first son, Stephen Lee, was born. After his military service, Marty worked briefly as a civilian police officer in Lansing before the family returned home to Northport. There, Marty and Cherry purchased the local gas stations and fuel oil business, which they operated for more than 30 years. Their second son, Sander Martin, was born in Northport in 1970.

Marty was deeply involved in the Northport community, serving as a member of the Village Council and for two terms as Village President. Over the years, he wore many hats. He was a licensed pilot and Realtor, worked as a district sales manager for Pepperidge Farm overseeing five Midwestern states, and drove a school bus in Northport for more than 25 years.

In the late 1990s, Marty and Cherry moved from the village to their farm near Kehl Lake, where they established Black Sheep Crossing, a no-kill farm animal sanctuary. It became a true labor of love, and over the next 30 years they fostered hundreds of animals.

Marty is survived by his wife Cherry and his two sons Stephen (Karla) and Sander (Shannon) and his five grandchildren;

Samual (Taylor) Scott, Sawyer Scott, Isabelle Scott, Hayden (Grace) Scott, and Abigail (Jack) Scott-Poslajko and four great grandchildren..

In accordance with Marty’s wishes, he has been cremated. He did not want a funeral or viewing, preferring instead a small family gathering.

Family and friends are encouraged to share their memories of Marty on this website and celebrate a life marked by family, community service, hard work, and compassion for animals.

Donations in Marty’s memory may be made to the Northport Area Heritage Association, 118 E. Nagonaba St., Northport, MI 49670.
