Dela E. Hulbert, 84, of Southfield, formerly of Maple City, passed away December 9, 2014 at her home with family by her side.
Dela was born on October 30, 1930 in Kalkaska to the late Nathan and Mary Elizabeth Thompson. Her father was a lumberman and her family moved often.
When Dela was young, her family lived a short time in Newberry, then moved back to Kalkaska and eventually to Cedar where she met and marries Raymond Hulbert Sr. of Maple City on November 15, 1948. Together they raised seven children.
Dela worked at Munson Hospital for many years before taking a job with Maple Valley Nursing Home where she worked for 17 years. Dela continued to care for the elderly, taking them into her home or going to theirs up until June of 2013. In her spare time she enjoyed watching her grandchildren and was "Grandma Dela" to many of the neighborhood children. She was a very kind and generous person who helped anyone when needed. Dela's hobbies included gardening, including house plants!, often taking sick plants from friends and relatives and nursing them back to health. She loved to play yahtzee and card games. In her early years she enjoyed playing shuffle board and going to "Grange".
Dela's faith and love for the Lord Jesus carried her though many troubled times, keeping her strong, kind and generous. She was the kind of person to go out of her way to help others in need.
Dela is survived by her children Ronda Hubbell of Southfield, Rodney "Jerry" (Amy) Hulbert of Maple City, Robin Jackson of Traverse City, and Richard (Regina) Hulbert of Maple City, 19 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, her loving sister Bonnie Jean Thompson of AZ and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 50 years – Raymond John Hulbert (1998) sons, Raymond John Hulbert Jr (2004), Ronald James Hulbert (1974), Roger Jeffery Hulbert (1976), two grandsons Ronald James Harrington (2001) and Dennis Jay Hulbert (1992), her parents, five brothers and five sisters.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and Celebration of Life Dinner will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in the spring of 2015.
