Obituary

DeWayne Frederick Belles, Sr., 89, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Traverse Manor, surrounded by the people he loved most—his family.

Born on February 6, 1935, in Kenton, Ohio, to Zurry Frederick and Nellie (Lambert) Belles, DeWayne spent most of his early years in Kalkaska, where his deep-rooted love for nature began. His family later moved to Traverse City, a place he cherished throughout his life.

DeWayne proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, an experience that shaped his character and gave him lifelong stories to tell. While stationed at Fort Campbell, Tennessee, he married his soulmate, Betty J. Mackey, on October 12, 1959. Their love story spanned decades until her passing in 2005, but DeWayne's heart remained with Betty every day that followed.

Known throughout the community for his hardworking spirit, DeWayne owned and operated DeWayne's Power Equipment, a small engine repair shop where customers became friends. His hands were never idle, whether he was fixing a motor, lending a tool, or offering advice. Later, he joined CRM, Inc., where he worked until his well-earned retirement. He was a proud, lifelong member of the East Bay Masonic Lodge, embodying values of service and integrity.

DeWayne's happiest moments were spent outdoors—whether on the water fishing, enjoying some time in a deer blind, or camping under the stars. He and Betty shared a love for traveling, and together they explored both familiar places and new horizons. But nothing in the world brought DeWayne more joy than spending time with his family. His love for them was boundless, and he was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, DeWayne (Rose) Belles, Jr. and Marlene Weston; his brother, James L. Belles; and his treasured granddaughters, Kimberlee (Nick) Forsman and Kristina (Kurt Russell) Belles. His legacy also lives on through his great-grandchildren, Lily, Jayden, Maggie, and Lucy, who will carry forward his stories and spirit.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, his parents, and his sister, Jean Robb.
