Donald "Don" Charles Woods, 88, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born on October 23, 1936, in Dunham, Kentucky, to the late Roy and Goldie (Large) Woods. He spent his early years in Virginia before moving to Michigan at the age of 12.
In high school, Don met the love of his life, Jacqueline Anne Smith. After graduating, he honorably served in the United States Army. Upon his return, he married Jackie, and together they devoted their lives to raising a loving family and setting an example rooted in kindness, integrity, and love.
Don had a long and fulfilling career with Detroit Edison, retiring in June 1994. He was a proud member of the Trenton Masonic Lodge and later joined the Traverse City Elks Lodge after moving north in 2000 to be closer to family.
A man of many interests, Don enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, caring for his cars, grilling, and taking walks. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and was an active member of his retirement community. Known for his knowledge and helpful spirit, Don was the go-to fixer of everything and the electrician in the family—often prompting the phrase, "Let's call Papa."
He was a devoted fan of the University of Michigan and Tom Brady, but most of all, Don treasured his role as a husband, father, and especially Papa. His deep love for his family and unwavering presence in their lives will be cherished forever.
Don is remembered as a generous, wise, and gentle man who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Don is survived by his loving wife Jackie of almost 65 years, his children Carolyn (Tim) Strauss, David (Connie) Woods, grandchildren, Donald (Elaine) Clark, Erin (Killian) Viles, David (Shannon) Woods, Christopher Woods, Elise (Jason) Mantey, great-grandchildren, Adelaide, Heidi, Sadie, Karl, Lucas, Hans, Wilhelm, Rosalynn, and one on the way, and many other loving family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Nathan.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with a service beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
