Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Donald Lee Van Doorne, 78, of Traverse City and formerly of Louisiana, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Donald was born on Sept. 16, 1932, to the late George and Doris (Cook) Van Doorne, in Spring Lake. Donald answered the call of duty, serving his country as a specialist with the United States Army during the Korean War. Don entered into marriage with the former Alice Gallup-Weaver on Nov. 15, 1975. Don was quiet in nature and very hard working. He made a living in a variety of trades, from foreman and quality control in various power plants, to over the road truck driver. He and Alice made their home in Traverse City many years ago while Don was working and driving truck for Grand Traverse Trucking. Don could often be found working around the house, puttering with his woodworking or adding to his collection of lighthouses. Don will be remembered for his hard work and helping others. Don was a caring husband and proud father and grandfather. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 323 in Traverse City and will be deeply missed. Donald is survived by his loving wife, Alice Van Doorne, of Traverse City; daughters, Amy (Scott) Grunow, Ann (Mark) Underwood and Sara (Mark) Schulte; his son, Scott Van Doorne; 14 grandchildren; five adopted foster grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters; a brother; and many other loving family members and friends.Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Valerie Van Doorne; and his stepfather, Lou DeBoer. Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Chris Lane will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Honor Guard of Cherryland VFW Post 2780. Graveside committal services will be held in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens at a later date.
