Donald Bruce Goodney, 90, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024, with his daughters by his side.
Don was born on July 31, 1933, to Ernest and Alberta Goodney in Ironwood Michigan. From an early age, in rural Marenisco he developed his hard work and family first ethic. He spent hours after school and on weekends chopping and stacking wood, for the log cabin he was raised in as well as for the landlord who lived next door. He enjoyed working outdoors and in his later years he would often sit in his chair in the garage soaking up the sunshine.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Don were truly fortunate. He was quick witted with infectious laughter.
Don earned a bachelor's degree in finance from Michigan State University and proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Don's greatest passion was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, always present to support his loved ones in their endeavors. Whether it was cheering on his grandchildren at band performances or sporting events, Don cherished every moment spent with his family.
He met the love of his life, Linda, while working as an accountant for the Federal Government. Their friendship blossomed into a beautiful marriage on August 19, 1961, and together they built a fifty-eight-year life filled with love.
Don was a gentleman in every sense of the word, treating his wife with unwavering respect and grace in her final years. Don was also known for his extensive collection of Stormy Kromer hats, which he proudly wore before they became a Northern Michigan tradition.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda Goodney, his parents, Ernest and Alberta Goodney, his sister and brother-in-law, Raymond and Beverly Myers and son-in-law Peter Jones.
Donald is survived by his daughter Demarie Goodney-Jones and Debra Goodney who selflessly devoted her life in his final years as his caregiver allowing him to stay in his home. Son-in-law Mark Duffie, grandchildren Taryn and Russell Carew, Mackenzie and Haley Jones, Zachary Goodney, Patrick Goodney, and his niece Teri Morante also survive. Maeve Pete, Stella, and Sullivan Carew gave him his title of "GREAT" grandpa.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m. officiated by Reverend Dr. Robin Carden. Burial will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Please share your cherished memories of Donald with his family at
