Obituary

Captain Donald Gerrard MacDougall, United States Navy, Retired, passed away peacefully at Medi-Lodge of GTC in Traverse City, Michigan on March 20, 2024.

The eldest son of Alexander and Edith (Steinkraus) MacDougall, Don was born and raised in Central and Northern Michigan. After earning a Master's degree from University of Washington, Captain MacDougall spent his 58 years of service as a Navy officer exploring the oceans and travelling a great expanse of the world. Don served on both coasts of the United States during his 34 years of active duty, eventually residing in Fairfax, Virginia while serving at the Pentagon with the United States Department of Defense. He was an avid scuba diver and underwater photographer. In 1989 he retired to Kingsley, Michigan. He enjoyed the peace, quiet, and beauty of the deep woods with his many animal companions.

Captain MacDougall was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bob; his sisters, Margaret MacDougall and Jean (MacDougall) Collins. He is survived by his niece, Mary Collins of Whitefish, Montana; John Collins of Polson, Montana; Kevin (Chrissy) Collins of Chicago Illinois; and Michael Collins of Chicago, Illinois.

A Memorial Mass will be observed in Polson, Montana. Memorial donations can be made to Cherryland Humane Society of Traverse City, Michigan.
