Donald Lee Schopieray, aged 86, a beloved resident of Traverse City, peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on February 20, 1938, to William and Hattie (Levinski) Schopieray, Don's life was marked by love, dedication, and a zest for adventure. It was at Munson Hospital where he crossed paths with the love of his life, Pauline Marie Kaltenbach. Their union in 1956 was the beginning of a beautiful journey that saw them raise six children together.
Don was a man deeply rooted in nature, finding solace and joy in the great outdoors. Family camping trips, exhilarating snowmobile rides, and countless hours spent hunting from a tree stand during the fall months were among his favorite pastimes. In the warmer seasons, his spirit soared on the golf course or adrift in a fishing boat, surrounded by the beauty of nature that he cherished.
His hands were skilled in many trades, and his work ethic was unmatched. Don was known for his dedication and hard work, often juggling multiple jobs simultaneously. From his early days at various sports shops to his eventual retirement from Elmers, he approached every task with determination and pride. His workshop was a sanctuary where he tinkered with engines and embarked on countless house projects. Painting race cars brought him immense joy, showcasing his talent and passion for the sport.
Yet amidst his busy life, Don always made time for the simple pleasures. He adored spending hours in the garden, nurturing life from the soil, and relished in friendly card games with loved ones. His culinary skills were renowned, especially his expertise in baking pies and crafting Christmas candy alongside his beloved Pauline—a tradition cherished by family.
Don is survived by his beautiful bride Pauline, children Jim (Mary) Schopieray, Jeanne (George) Penfold, Donna (Daryl) Poff, Dale Schopieray, Janet (Brian) Weber, Judy (Gary) Flores. Twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Three Brothers, Leonard (Mary) Endres, Larry (Sandy) Endres, Pete Schopieray. Sister, Barb Richards, and sister -in-law, Karen Endres.
