Doris Mildred Coupe
Died-May 22, 2012
Traverse City-Doris M. Coupe died May 22, 2012 at Munson Medical Center. She was born March 25, 1927 in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Doris married her husband Max of 64 years, who was in the Navy, on December 31, 1943.
Following his discharge in 1945, Max and Doris moved to Detroit. Doris worked at the College of Nursing at Wayne State University where she handled grants, traineeships, and scholarships. She retired in 1980 but was called back to work in the outreach program for the university in Traverse City after the couple moved to the area.
In the early 1970's they found "up north" property and began building their cottage/retirement home on Old Mission Peninsula. Soon after, she joined the neighborhood association and eventually became the group's treasurer.
Doris was also a volunteer at Munson Medical Center, the Peninsula Library and election worker for many years. She was a long-time member of the Old Mission Women's Club and the Crown Women's Golf League. She served on and chaired numerous committees for both organizations as well as recruiting and encouraging many new members. Doris and Max were also members of Cedar Run Golf Course until it closed. She enjoyed spending time in Florida the last few winters, playing tiles, golf, knitting, shopping, cooking and an occasional trip to the casino.
Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband Max. She is survived by her brother Arthur, devoted nieces, Pamela and Sue and nephew, Michael; great-nieces and great-nephews, many true and unwavering friends and her constant companion, Lily who needs a loving home.
