Dorothy (Goodrich) Evancho, 93, died peacefully on May 8, 2024, with family at her side. She was born November 11, 1930 in Detroit, MI to Robert Remington Goodrich and Dorothy Katherine O'Connor. She is preceded in death by brothers Robert and Gordon. Her father's furniture store in Detroit is where she developed her lifelong appreciation of home furnishings as well as interior design. This is when she began crafting her ability to make any room beautiful and feel like home.
A 1948 graduate of St. Anothony in Detroit, Dorothy went on to marry her high school sweetheart Joe Evancho in 1951. Last November they celebrated 72 years of marriage during which they raised four children, Bob (Susan) Evancho, Kate (Larry) Gladchun, Ann (Dave) Anderson and Dorothy's favorite, Joe H. Evancho. The Evanchos' cherished home on Audubon in Detroit was where family, friends and neighbors frequently gathered to enjoy Manhattans and much laughter. She loved to sew, especially quilts and dresses for her daughters and granddaughters.
Once their children were grown, Dorothy and Joe moved to Traverse City. Beginning in the mid-80s she and Joe welcomed grandchildren Kate, Jeff, Joe, Gavin, Sara, Liz and Corinn. During Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners, Dorothy could reliably be found "at the kids table" where she shared her warmth, sharp wit and graciousness with those who admired her most, her grandchildren. Within the past several years Dorothy and Joe were blessed with great-grandchildren; Auden, Remington, Elisa, Margot, Nina, Clara and another great-granddaughter on the way.
She leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Dorothy will be remembered for her quiet faith, sincere kindness, frequent furniture rearranging, hilarious zingers, famous fluff dessert, effortless style, wonderful hospitality and deep devotion to God, family and friends.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Traverse City at 12pm on Friday, May 17, 2024. The family will greet friends prior to mass at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Father Fred Foundation.
