Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY —
Dorothy M. McDermott, age 93, of Traverse City, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2019 at the Bay Ridge Assisted Living Facility in the loving care of her family.

Dorothy was born at her home on Old Mission on April 27, 1926 to Arthur and Ida (Christopher) Mlujeak. Dorothy grew up in Old Mission and was a lifetime resident of the area. She graduated from Central High School in 1944 and shortly thereafter moved into Traverse City. She went to work for Shaffer Collett, Walker Russell, CPA and Munson Medical Center doing secretarial work. Dorothy married Robert McDermott on Sept. 30, 1950 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2016.

She was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where she helped with funeral luncheons. Dorothy enjoyed swimming, crocheting, knitting, snowmobiling, the Old Engine Show and taught 4-H crocheting in the craft building. She was featured on the popular website "Nana's Crafty Home," a website developed by Tonya Bush, a crochet and knitting student of Dorothy's. She was interviewed as part of a local history project as well as being interviewed by the Women's History Project of Northwest Michigan. Dorothy really appreciated and loved her cat, Ginger.

Dorothy is survived by her great-nieces, Michelle (Marc) Marrow and Pam (Rich) Vandermey; great-nephew, Terry (Stacy) Montague; nieces, Sharon (John) Quantiela and Linda (Terry) Pendock; and nephews, Bradley Montague, Peter Montague and Jim (Sharon) McDermott. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, William and Arthur; sister, Odessa; nephews, Bill, Gregory, William, Terrence and Dennis; and niece, Donita.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bay Ridge and Hospice of Michigan for the excellent care they provided Dorothy. A funeral service for Dorothy will take place on Friday, May 24, 2019 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home at 11 a.m., with a visitation held one hour prior to the service.

Dorothy will be laid to rest at 2 p.m. Friday at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
