KINGSLEY — Dorothy Emily Westrate, 86, of Kingsley, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.Dorothy was born Friday, Sept. 26, 1924, to the late Ernest and Estella (Mercer) Wheat, in Kingsley. She graduated from Union High School in Grand Rapids. On Friday, Sept. 12, 1947, at Scribner Avenue Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, she married Donald E. Westrate.For 50 years, Dorothy was a librarian at Kingsley Public Library. She was a member of Kingsley Baptist Church, where she had served as choir director, and also was a soloist at many area weddings.Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed working in her large garden, canning the many vegetables and fruits they harvested, as well as making preserves.Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Julie Westrate, of Kingsley, and Jenifer Westrate, of Grand Rapids; her sisters-in-law, Barbara Wheat, of Charlevoix, and Ellen Lindholm, of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are Dorothy's very good friends and caregivers, Shari Olson and Shelly Hulwick.Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Don, on July 26, 2009; her parents; and her siblings, Warren Wheat and Vivian Engels.Services celebrating Dorothy's life will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at Kingsley Baptist Church, with Pastor Mike Brayton officiating. Visitation for family and friends will take place at the church beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kingsley.Memorial contributions may be directed to Kingsley Baptist Church.
