Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Douglas William Dunnigan, 71, of Traverse City and formerly of Lockport, N.Y., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City.Douglas was born on Sunday, Nov. 26, 1939, to the late Francis and Lucille (LaPort) Dunnigan in Lockport, N.Y. Following high school, DeSales High Class of 1957, Doug earned his associate's degree in business. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Porretta, who survives.Doug enjoyed a 42-year career with General Motors, including assignments with Harrison Radiator, plants in Tonawanda, N.Y., Buffalo, N.Y., Saginaw, and most recently as Finance Director for General Motors/Delphi. His employment brought him from Western New York, to Saginaw, with a three-year assignment in Paris, France, and brief periods in Beijing, China.Upon retirement, Doug and Mary relocated to the Traverse City area, where they enjoyed the beauty of the area. Doug was active in the communities in which he lived. He was very active with the Northpointe Homeowners Association in Acme Township and a member of the Traverse City Economic Club. He enjoyed nature, golf, world and local history. He cherished life, his family and friends. Relationships were very important to him, and his greatest passions were his family and grandchildren (who affectionately called him "Gramps").Doug is survived by his wife, Mary; his sons, Timothy (Wendy), of Syracuse, N.Y., Steven (Kelly), of Pittsford, N.Y., and Jeffrey (Sara), of Richmond, Va.; his grandchildren, Mary Margaret, Daniel Patrick, Grace Elizabeth, Joseph Douglas, Sarah Ann, Erin Jeanne and Abby Lynn; and his sister, Barbara (Charles) Schrankel, of Pittsburgh, Pa. Doug is also survived by his mother-in-law, Antoneitte Porretta; sisters-in-law, Catherine (Charles) Montedoro, Linda (Henry) Sperduti Jr. and Carla (Le Roy) Smith, all of Lockport, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie and Caroline; and his father-in-law, Carl Porretta. Family services will be held this summer at White Haven Memorial Park in Pittsford, N.Y.
