TRAVERSE CITY — Douglas Paul Tesner, 64, of Traverse City, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, with his wife, Peggy by his side.Doug was born May 21, 1946, in Royal Oak. He grew up in Southfield with his loving parents, the late Edward and Alberta (Gutrel) Tesner. Doug served his country as a proud member of the United States Navy. While in the service Doug developed his skills in photography through the Syracuse University Navy Program, becoming a photojournalist for the military during and after the Vietnam War. Doug retired from the Navy after 22 years of service.Doug was a true photographer at heart. He rarely was without a camera and seemed to always work in some form of freelance photography with clients, including Sunset Magazine, Indian Peoples Magazine, American Indian Report Magazine, New York Times, LA Times, Santa Fe New Mexican, The Washington Post, LA Times, The Associated Press, Getty Images, The Catholic News Service and others. Doug's photojournalism has won many awards which include the prestigious Navy Photojournalist of the Year and Honorable Mention Military Photographer of the Year. Recently he won Second Place News Photo MPPA (Michigan Press Photographers Association) Monthly Clip Contest for January 2005, Third Place Sports Action Picture in the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar 2004 and his photographs have been selected for MSNBC Week in Pictures, Washington Post's Camera Works, Day in Photos and San Francisco Chronicle's Day in Pictures. In addition, Doug won three New Mexico Associated Press Managing Editors awards for 2002 and Third Place News Photo in the Newspaper Press Photographers Association's April 2002 regional (Region 8) clip contest.It is easy to see Doug loved his work and was an avid newshound. Even when Doug set the camera down you could find him tuned into Fox News or occasionally CNN. His escape from the pace of the world and his passion was his time fishing and hunting. Doug has left a legacy depicted in his work and cherished by the many that had the opportunity to meet him. He will be remembered for his talent but also his positive, outspoken and fun nature.Douglas is survived by his wife, Peggy Tesner of Traverse City; his son, Patrick Tesner of Traverse City; stepsons, Jim (Barbara) Huber and Tim (Michelle) Huber; stepdaughter, Laurie (Jeff) Smith; two children from a previous marriage, Paul and Trenessa; nieces, Nancy (Bob) Taylor and Christa (Steve) Leyendecker; nephew, John (Barbara) Tesner; sister-in-law, Beverly Tesner; many caring co-workers and professional colleagues; as well as other loving family members and friends.Douglas was preceded in death by his first wife, Maggie; his parents; and one brother, John. Visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. today, July 1, 2010, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010, also at the funeral home, with visitation from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. The Rev.
