Duane Seymore Hefty, aged 100, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 4, 1923, to Harley and Marian Hefty.
Duane was a beloved figure, cherished by many for his great sense of humor and his penchant for playful banter with his family. In his leisure time, he found joy in watching sports, particularly supporting his beloved Michigan teams—the Lions, Red Wings, and Tigers. However, his true passion lay in playing golf amidst the scenic landscapes of Northern Michigan. Duane's love for music was evident, with a special fondness for country, big band, and the soulful tunes of Ella Fitzgerald.
A man with a sweet tooth, Duane had a weakness for ice cream , savoring the simple pleasures in life.
Duane's impact reached far and wide. With a kind and gentle soul, he welcomed others into his life and left an indelible mark on those he met. Duane was a candidate in the USN V12 Mid shipment program at the University of Wisconsin, graduating with his mechanical degree and commission as Ensign. He served as Engineering Officer on two ships until his discharge in 1946. Upon returning home, Duane began his career path in the automotive industry beginning as an industrial engineer working up to plant manager. His career in the Automotive industry spanned 35yrs, where he served as Executive Vice President of Operations at United Technologies and ITT-AEPD. After retirement, Duane used his business training from the Wharton School of Business as a consultant. Duane was brought back from retirement for 5 more years serving as President at Fenwick Woodstream.
In his youth, Duane found lifelong love with Shirley, sharing 48 years of laughter, love, and happiness until her passing. Later in life, he embraced a second chapter with Louella, spending 28 loving years together. Duane was a man of wisdom and kindness, leaving a legacy of warmth and compassion.
He is survived by his son, Britton (Monica) Hefty, daughters Diane (James) Johnson, Paula (William) Nyeholt, Andrea (Richard) DeVries, Tracy (Mark) Morrison, eleven grandchildren, and his sister Yvonne.
