Obituary

Duane William Stowe, 83, of Traverse City, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on July 29, 1942, to the late Martha and William Stowe. Duane graduated from Traverse City Central High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1967.

After returning to Traverse City, Duane met his lifelong love, Judy Mae Lautner. They married in 1969 and spent 38 wonderful years together, before Judy’s passing in 2007. During their marriage, they enjoyed bowling, camping, gardening and working on countless projects for their family. Those that worked alongside him could often hear him say, “what if a guy…” as he offered a solution or a helping hand.

Duane’s greatest joy was always his family. After Judy passed away, he embraced the role of both mother and father, making sure his children and grandchildren always felt loved and supported. He hosted family dinners, attended sporting events, welcome weekend sleepovers with grandkids and was always there to listen, offer advice and share in a conversation.

In 1996, Duane battled with cancer requiring a bone marrow transplant. At the time, doctors hoped the treatment would give him five more years. This month he celebrated 30 years since the transplant – a true blessing that allowed his family to share so many more memories with him.

In his later years, Duane enjoyed his many errand runs and adventures with his brother, Garth Stowe. The two were rarely for apart and always seemed to find something to do together.

Everyone who knew Duane, loved him. His kindness was genuine, and he took the time to learn about people, remembering details of their lives, and making everyone feel valued. He truly was a special man.

Duane is survived by his daughter, Melissa (Shawn) O’Brien; son, Brad (Kim) Stowe; grandchildren; Bailey, Collin, Max and Nathan. Also surviving are his siblings; Judy Fenton, Jim (Victoria) Stowe and Garth (Sharon) Stowe, along with many in-laws, nieces, nephews and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Judy, his grandson, Mason and siblings; Roy, Ed, Donny, Maxine, and Larry Stowe.

Duane’s family will be hosting a celebration of life at his home on Church Road, on Saturday, June 27, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to join together, share memories and celebrate a life well-lived.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to Munson Hospice, c/o Munson Healthcare Foundation, 1150 Medical Campus Drive, Traverse City, Michigan 49684.
