Traverse City – Edward Louis Schichtel, 94, of Buckley passed away July 13, 2015 at his home surrounded by his wife and family.
Ed was born on April 26, 1921 to the late John and Eleanor (Logsdon) Schichtel in Traverse City, Michigan.
Ed worked for 32 years for the Traverse City Iron Works retiring in 1983. He was an excellent machinist running engine lathes and was particularly proud of making and assembling telescopic valves. He served as union chairman for the UAW Local 945, as well as a committee man for a number of years. After retirement, he worked at Ric's Grocery Store in Interlochen.
Ed was a good carpenter, and along with his son, built his own garage among other projects. Ed was raised on a farm and always had a beautiful vegetable garden. He grew the best geraniums, dahlias and cannas in the Boardman neighborhood. Every day for many years Ed could be seen walking Rebel, the family's big German Shepherd through town. They were a handsome pair. In 2006 , Ed won a trip to Hawaii and at the age of 85 took his first plane ride.
On November 19, 1946 Ed married Barbara (Homan) Schichtel and together they had 4 children. Together they raised their family in the Traverse City area. Barbara died September 16, 1983.
On August 17, 1985 Ed married Betty (Kaatz) Schichtel in Traverse City.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, brothers George and Raymond and his first wife Barbara.
Ed is survived by his wife Betty, children Catherine (Philip) Jarvi, Sandra Millen, Robert (Laura) Schichtel, Teresa Hunter, step-children Rosamond (Rev. David) Ostendorf, Dona Louise (Paul) Jester, Elizabeth (Gary) Clous, Howard (Sally) Meeker, Doree (Joe) Grabowski, Steven (Lori) Meeker, Mary Jane (Dick) Caster,17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren..
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2015 at 11:00 am at the St. Mary's Church of Hannah with visitation beginning at 10:00 am.
Graveside services will take place immediately following the service.
