Obituary

Elaine Hays, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away on May 12, 2025 at 83 years old. Raised in Suttons Bay, Elaine grew up with the value of hard work instilled in her by her parents—her mother, a dedicated nurse, and her father, a hardworking farmer. Life on the farm deeply shaped Elaine's love for animals and the natural world, a passion that followed her throughout her life.

In her young adulthood, Elaine embraced adventure, taking part in road rallies that spoke to her strong-willed independence. Elaine had what could be described as a tenacious and resilient Viking spirit.

Elaine spent 26 years as the office manager at Northwestern Michigan Dermatology, where her dedication and sharp wit made her an invaluable part of the team and a friend to many.

Outside of work, Elaine was a woman of many talents and passions. She was an avid gardener, a skilled watercolor artist, and a frequent visitor to local craft fairs, always on the lookout for something beautiful and unique. She was especially proud of her beloved miniature pinschers, Sassy and Foxy, who were her cherished companions. She was a faithful philanthropist, supporting numerous political causes and animal and wildlife organizations close to her heart.

Elaine is survived by her brother Richard McAllister of Gulf Shores, Alabama and his children; nephew Scott McAllister, nephew Terry McAllister (Marian) and niece Sherri Patterson (Joseph), sister-in-law Valerie Hays Klein of Traverse City and her children; nephew Jeffrey Klein (Janice), niece Tracy Kromer, niece Hilerie Klein-Rensi (Robert), nephew Tyler Klein (Valerie); and their families.
