Eleanor Seiter Douglass

Traverse City-Eleanor S. Douglass, 90, of Traverse City passed away July 16, 2013 at Munson Medical Center.
Eleanor was born on May 8, 1923 in Detroit to the late J. Earl Seiter and Blanche H. Alexander. She grew up in Towson, Maryland and graduated from the University of Maryland. After graduation, she worked as a time and motion study engineer for Glen L. Martin during World War II. After the war she worked for McCormick Tea and Spice Company.
On June 9, 1951 Eleanor married Robert C. Douglass in Baltimore, Maryland, and the couple moved to the Detroit area and raised their family in Farmington Hills, MI.
There, Eleanor was a member of the Farmington Area Naturalist Group. She was passionate about wildflowers, and she frequently gave presentations to area schools on the topic. Other hobbies included gardening, crewel embroidery, and reading.
She later moved to Southfield, Adrian, and finally Traverse City, where she has lived since 1999. She volunteered for the Head Start program, reading books to children, in both Adrian and Traverse City.
Eleanor was a devout member of the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City and enjoyed participating in the Love, Inc. group.
Eleanor is survived by her five children and their spouses: Lisa and Jose' Torres of Enfield, NH, Robert and Patricia Douglass of Vancouver, WA, Mark and Linda Douglass of Kingsley, Dorothy "Dori" and Dan Livy of Louisville, KY, and Amy Douglass and Gerald Grossman of Newberry. She is also survived by sisters Margaret Graham of Brookings, OR and Jodi Dean of Peoria, IL, as well as by eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Robert and her sister Kay Roys.
A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Monday, August 19 at 11 am. A reception with refreshments will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City or to the Boardman River Nature Center in care of the Grand Traverse Conservation District.
