Eleanore "Elly" Cosgrove, 94, of Traverse City, was received by her Lord and Savior on January 1st, 2025.
Elly was born on October 15, 1930, to German immigrants Fred and Anna (Knopf) Laich. She grew up on a farm in New Haven, MI, alongside her younger siblings, Carl and Nancy. Together, they sold fruits and vegetables at a stand on Gratiot Avenue. Elly graduated from New Haven High School, where she wrote the school fight song, which is still sung today.
Following her graduation, she became Miss Macomb County, which led to her competing for Peach Queen. During a parade, she caught the eye of a young Michigan State Police trooper. They married six months later, and together they had four children: David, John (Patricia), Tom (the late Lynda), and beloved daughter Susan (Patrick) Cole. Elly and John shared a 55-year love affair until his passing in 2006.
Elly had many talents and career ventures. She was the successful business owner of "The Diet Center," a real estate agent with Schmidt Real Estate, and an active participant in the "Let's Go Blue" store in Traverse City. Additionally, she was an accomplished watercolor artist, gardener, seamstress, and quilter.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she found joy and fellowship in her Bible study groups. Elly was a true servant, leading many to the Lord by sharing His word and setting an example through her actions.
Despite her many hobbies, business endeavors, and devotion to family, Elly always made time for her extended family and friends. She firmly believed that every person is a unique creation of God and should be treated with dignity and respect. Even in her final days, many gathered by her side to pay tribute to this incredible woman. Elly selflessly helped others realize their potential.
Today, she resides in paradise, welcomed by her beloved husband, John. Although her passing leaves a void in our hearts, we find comfort knowing that she now gazes upon her Savior, Jesus Christ, in paradise.
Elly is survived by her grandchildren: Angela (Tommy) Breeden, Christopher (Mary Clare) Cole, Heather Cosgrove, Andy (Emily) Cole, Katie (Kilton) Kingsman, Travis Fetters, Trent (Ginette) Fetters, Trevor (Emily) Fetters, Kim Cole; nineteen great-grandchildren (who affectionately called her "Grandma Grape"); her sister, Nancy Christeloveon; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, daughters-in-law Carol and Lynda, and grandson Eric Bear.
A visitation will take place at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, January 9, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow.
A light reception will be held at the Elks Lodge in Traverse City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cosgrove Foundation, Project Feed the Kids, or St. Jude Children's Hospital. Elly's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Orchard Creek Supportive Care for their compassion and dedication and to Hospice of Michigan.
