Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG — Elizabeth Z. "Betty" Cocking, 96, of Williamsburg, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at Hope Village in Williamsburg. Betty was born on May 6, 1915, to the late Peter and Catherine (Webber) Zitterkoph in Lincoln, Neb. She married Thomas G. Cocking on Jan. 4, 1936, in Flint; they were devoted to each other for 76 years. During World War II, Betty worked on airplane bomb sights at AC Spark Plug in Flint; after the war, she was a dedicated homemaker and helped care for her parents. Tom and Betty were the "go-to" people of their families. Moving to Acme in 1968, Betty became a member of the Acme Women's Club and as a member of that club would provide up to 40 dozen cookies every year for the club's Christmas holiday cookie sale. Betty enjoyed knitting, quilting, crocheting, baking and gardening. She won numerous awards from the Michigan State Federation of Women's Clubs for her knitting and quilting talents. She was also currently teaching a knitting class at Hope Village. Betty was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church of Traverse City. She is survived by her husband, Thomas, of Williamsburg; daughter, Sonia and son-in-law, Wallace Olson, of Williamsburg; her grandchildren, Eric T. (Kimberly) Olson, of Holland, and Elizabeth A. (David) Young, of Williamsburg; as well as her beloved great-grandchildren, Spencer and Adam Olson, and Rachel and Catherine Young. She is also survived by nieces and nephews and their families. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John, Edward and Phillip Zitterkoph; and her sisters, Margaret Zitterkoph and Maria Stevens. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at Hope Village in Acme. Pastor Dale Ostema will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to Central United Methodist Church, The American Cancer Society or the Hope Village Chapel fund.
