Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Hepner (Bishop), 97, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away of natural causes on December 6, 2024.

Betty was born in 1927 in Richland, Michigan, to her parents, Elmer and Laura Bishop. She grew up in Richland and Portage alongside her brothers, Bill and Dick, forming lifelong memories and friendships. A bright student, Betty graduated as Salutatorian from Mattawan High School and later pursued higher education with vigor, earning an RN degree from the University of Michigan Nursing School and a BA degree from Alma College.

While at Alma College, Betty met the love of her life, Harry "Willie" Hepner. The couple married and settled in Detroit, where Betty began her career as a delivery room nurse at Women's Hospital.

After starting a family, Betty dedicated herself to raising their three sons—Mark, Paul, and Bruce—and was a devoted wife, mother, and Cub Scout Den mother. Once her boys were grown, Betty returned to her nursing career, working at Beaumont Hospital and specializing in oncology care at various specialty clinics until her retirement.

In 1997, Betty and Willie moved to the Traverse City area, enjoying the beauty and community of Northern Michigan. In 2018, they became residents of Traverse Manor, where Betty continued to brighten the lives of those around her with her kindness, humor, and wisdom.

Betty is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Willie; her parents, Elmer and Laura Bishop; and her brother, Bill Bishop.

She is survived by her brother, Dick Bishop (Freida); her brother-in-law, Myron Hepner (Donna); her three sons: Mark Stephen Hepner (Diane) of Brownstown, MI; Paul Allen Hepner (Debbie) of Marquette, MI; and Bruce Adam Hepner (Deb) of Traverse City, MI; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at a later date, with interment to follow. Memorial contributions may be made in Betty's honor to a charity of your choice.

Betty will be remembered for her selfless dedication to her family, her compassion as a nurse, and her gentle yet strong spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and a life well-lived.
