Eugene Smith Lewis, 81, of Williamsburg passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Eugene was born January 8, 1935 in Traverse City to the late Reed and Beulah (Woodrow) Lewis. He attended Traverse City High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp.
Eugene married Shirley Merkle on April 2, 1960 in a service in Alden, MI. Eugene worked for many years at Stromberg Carlson and later at Grace Metal Products. He was a tireless worker and continued working up until his 81 birthday.
Eugene will be remembered for his strong Christian faith and his love for family. He was especially thankful that he got to spend time with his great grandson Blake Finch. He was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Yuba" and was very active in historical preservation in Leelanau, Grand Traverse and Antrim counties, including curating his own museum.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Lewis of Williamsburg; daughter Donna (Chris) Harrier of Casa Grande, AZ; son Brian (Kimberly) Lewis of Williamsburg; grandchildren William (Kim) Trotter and Amber (Ryan) Finch; and great grandchild Blake Thomas Finch.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Wilma Morrison, and brother Duane Lewis.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 20, 2016 at Yuba Cemetery. Pastor Nate Starkey will officiate the committal service.
