TRAVERSE CITY — Eugene Donald "Gene" Smith, 48, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly early Monday morning, March 28, 2011, at his home. Born Aug. 18, 1962, in Midland, he was the son of Donald Eugene and Cathy (Latosky) Smith. On July 15, 2006, in Traverse City, he married the former Tracy Kay Howard. Their marriage of nearly five years was filled with much love, laughter and togetherness.Gene was a longtime resident of Midland, where he attended and graduated from Midland High School. At the time of his death, Gene served as an assistant manager of the underwriting division of Hagerty Insurance, a position he enjoyed for many years.Gene's interests were hunting and fishing. But above all, he relished the time he spent with his family supporting their various endeavors and the free spirit he felt by riding his Silver Anniversary 2003 Edition of his Harley Davidson.He will be truly missed for his devotion and deep love for his wife and children. He is survived by his loving wife, Tracy Kay Smith, of Traverse City; children, Alex Dodge, of Midland, Madison (age 10) and Colton (age 2 1/2), both at home; father, Don (Bev) Smith, of Beverly Hills, Fla.; mother, Cathy Marble, of Midland; sister, Carla (Rob) Clark; brother, Kevin (Tammy) Smith, all of Midland; along with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at 4 p.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Ronald Gay from Torch Lake Assembly of God Church will officiate. Cremation will follow. In remembrance of Gene, memorials may be directed to the Eugene D.
