Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Evelyn V. Kinnaird, 99, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, April 9, 2011, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.Evelyn was born in Portland, Ore., on Sunday, Aug. 13, 1911, to the late W. Vern and Pearl (Higginson) Hogue. Evelyn grew up in Cadillac and moved to Traverse City at the age of 22. On Friday, Oct. 22, 1937, she married James Kinnaird, who preceded her in death in 1998. Together they raised their three daughters.She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, where she served as a deacon.After raising her family, Evelyn worked in the retail industry working for J.C. Penney and then Tom's Food Markets, until her retirement.Evelyn was a beautiful knitter. She made many sweaters, scarves and mittens for her family throughout the years. In her later years, she knit more than 800 baby caps, which were donated for the newborns at Munson Medical Center.Prior to living with her youngest daughter, Evelyn lived at Glen Eagle for five years, where she enjoyed a wide range of social activities. Evelyn loved to play competitive games and cribbage; Yahtzee and Skip Bo were her favorites. Cooking and reading were other favorite hobbies.Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Robert) Coulter, of The Villages, Fla., and Kathy (Lyle) Page, of Traverse City; son-in-law, Robert Denslow, of Weidman; four grandchildren, Rob (Kristin) Coulter, of Portage, Craig (Amber) Coulter, of Traverse City, Laurie (Eric) Leaman, of Boyne City, and Julie Page, of Traverse City; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Margaret Furney, of Traverse City; and her niece, Marcia Furney, of Cadillac.In addition to her husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by an infant son and, very recently, her daughter, Evelyn Denslow.Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 30200 Telegraph Road, Bingham Farms, MI 48025; or to The Cherryland Humane Society, 1750 Ahlberg Road, Traverse City, MI 49686.A memorial service will be held at a future date.Please share your memories and thoughts with Evelyn's family by way of her online guestbook at www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com.The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
