Obituary

Floyd Douglas "Doug" Wallace Jr., 101 of Williamsburg, Michigan passed away October 16, 2026 at Autumn House in Williamsburg. Doug was born February 22, 1925 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Floyd D. Wallace and Lela E. (VanKirk) Wallace. He graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and Purdue University with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Doug married Betty (Ferguson) July 31, 1948 in Southport, Indiana.

At Purdue, Doug was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Navy's V-12 Officer Training Program. He was commissioned as an officer and served at Naval Air Stations in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Norfolk, Virginia. After military service and graduation, Doug joined Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he spent his entire career designing aircraft engines, engine testing facilities and research laboratory equipment. He also achieved his life-long dream of flying, becoming a private pilot and flying his own single engine plane for many years.

While he enjoyed the varied challenges of various engineering projects at Allison, Doug readily embraced retirement, moving to Travere City and keeping busy with home remodeling, growing grapes, making wine, reading, writing, travelling with Betty, and visiting family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing, especially the fall Coho runs, and sailing small boats on Elk Lake and his sloop Sindbad on Grand Traverse Bay. Doug enjoyed classical music, symphony orchestras in Traverse City and Venice, Florida, and Interlochen Arts Academy performances.

Doug was a man of deep faith. He was active in North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, the Presbyterian Church in Venice, Florida where he was an affiliate member, and the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, where he served as an Elder and a member of the property committee.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents of Sarasota, Florida, his sister, Donna Jean (Aldred) of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and his wife Betty. He is survived by two children, James D. (Linda) Wallace of Wheaton, Illinois and Janet (Michael) Toscano of Elk Rapids, Michigan, grandchildren Daniel Wallace of Wheaton, Illinois, James (Katie) Wallace of Lombard, Illinois, Angela (Bryan) Young of Winfield, Illinois, and Jennifer (Joseph) Granning of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and five great-grandchildren.

Doug’s ashes will be committed to the prayer garden at the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City in a private ceremony. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City or the Kiwanis Club of Traverse City Foundation.
