Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Frances L. Rokos, 97, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2012. She was born June 1, 1914, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Duffek) Kroupa at their home on Old Mission Peninsula. Frances was a retired Registered Nurse and graduated from St. Francis High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Muskegon in 1935.She worked at the Old Boardman Valley Hospital for four years before doing private-duty nursing for the Munson Hospital RN Registry for many years. On June 7, 1938, Frances married Henry W. Rokos at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mapleton, and together they enjoyed 62 years of marriage before he passed away in 2000. Frances enjoyed gardening, knitting, fishing and playing cards. She especially treasured summers spent with her family at their little cottage on the Old Mission Peninsula. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Variety Club and the Munson Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a volunteer for Red Cross Blood Drives and Camp Roy-El. Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Ann (Daniel) Stainforth, of Elk Rapids and Knoxville, Tenn., and Mary Condit, of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Brian (Cheri) Stainforth, of Frankenmuth, Scott Stainforth, of Warren, Glenn Stainforth, of Traverse City, Sheri (Bryan) Good, of Knoxville, Tenn., and James Condit, of Portage; six great-grandchildren, Ryan, Jordan and Baylee Stainforth, of Frankenmuth, and Tori, Kara and Loryn Good, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Rokos; as well as many other loving family members and friends.She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Margaret (Ray) Dohm and Catherine (Roy) Timmins; and brothers, Henry Kroupa and Bernard (Dorothy) Kroupa, all of the Traverse City area. Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 5 until 7 p.m. today, April 22, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Church. Frances will be laid to rest next to her husband at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. Frances' family wishes to thank Dr. Edward Kalat and all the Munson staff who helped take such excellent care of her during the past several months and especially those at Hospice House for their compassion and concern.
