Mr. Al Smith of Traverse City passed away peacefully at his residence March 12, 2014 at the age of 87. Al was born Frank Allan Smith in Leslie, MI to Frank Seth Smith and Vera Mae (Spangler) Smith August 19, 1926. Al was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the signal Corps in the Philippines and in General Douglas McArthur's parade band in occupied Japan. He then worked for Dow Corning in Midland as an electrical engineer attaining his professional certification from the University of Michigan. After retiring, Al moved his family to Traverse City to enjoy the Northern Michigan lifestyle. Al was a musician at heart and was involved in music his entire life. He was an active member of the Epsilon Jazz Band as well as playing with many other local musicians. Most recently Al was preparing to play his 25th Rotary Show as a member of the band. He was also involved in Ham Radio for many years.
Al was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Harlan and Rollin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Patricia Ann(Parsons)Smith, daughter Linda(James) Williams; sons Michael(Nancy)Smith and Patrick(Cathy)Smith, grandchildren; Katie(Kyle) Green, Mark Williams, Jacen, Amanda, Melissa and Shelby Smith, Heidi, Beth, Tommy and Mae Mueller and great grandsons Parker Weaver and Taylor Green.
A celebration of Al's life will take place on Monday March 17, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. with visitation one hour prior at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Memorials in Al's name may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society.
