TRAVERSE CITY — Frederick Justice Brown Jr., 85, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at Munson Medical Center, with his son by his side.Fred was born Nov. 28, 1925, to the late Frederick J. Brown Sr. and Mabel Marie (Rivard) Brown, in Traverse City. After his schooling, Fred enlisted in the Army and served the United States during the Korean War. He was on the front lines and earned the Combat Infantry Badge. Fred attained Corporal status after he was honorably discharged. Following his time in service, Fred married Ruth Elaine Boehnlein. Fred worked for Parts Manufacturing and eventually went into the roofing business, retiring after 30 years. Spending time outdoors, hunting for anything, especially for ducks, fishing, tinkering around his garage and fixing his cars were things Fred enjoyed doing. Fred also liked to spend time with his friends, family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving Fred are his children, Fred (Patricia) Brown III, of Traverse City, and Daryl Brown, of Traverse City; daughters, Jan Brown, of Traverse City, Beverly (Dallas) Bond, of Calumet, Julie (Dan) Carter, of Traverse City, and Paula (Sam) Mancuso, of Spring Lake; grandchildren, Shannon, Jo Ann, Lisa, Paul, Chris, Charlotte, Jacob, Joy, Tiffany, Chelsea, Dallas, Ciara, Brooke, Fredrick IV, Dawn and Amanda; many great-grandchildren; siblings, Yvonne Cousino, Gary (Leila) Brown, Shirley (Al) Winowicki, Sandra Kosch and Tom (Nancy) Brown; and lots of nieces, nephews and cousins. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jean Merchant and Betty Anderson; wife, Ruth; two grandsons, Wayne Michael Carter and Chad Joseph Brown; and son, David Alan Brown. Visitation will be held for Fred today, Sept., 11, 2011, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept, 12, 2011, also at the funeral home, with a visitation held one hour prior. Pastor Justin Grimm will serve as officiant.
