Obituary

Born on January 19, 1921 to Fred Albert and Emily Bertha Stoye, Frederick (Fred) was a son, father, uncle, and grandpa, and great grandpa, that was very forgiving and very generous. He grew up in Detroit and went to Redford High School where he was to become an All-American swimmer. After graduating from Wayne State University, he went to the University of Detroit Dental School. It was during this time that he had a blind date, on Valentines Day, 1943, with his future wife, Barbara James. She was the love of his life and were married for almost 65 years. He graduated and opened his dental practice in Detroit in 1946. He welcomed his daughter, Laura Christine in 1947 and his son Fred D. Stoye Jr., DDS in 1950. He was an avid outdoors man and loved to spend time at the family cottage on Higgins Lake. As a hunter, he had countless times hunting in the woods of Northern Michigan. He even had the honor of being a friend and hunting partner to Fred Bear, the father of modern archery. He practiced dentistry in Detroit for 36 years and had the pleasure of practicing with his son until his retirement. He and his wife moved to Traverse City after he retired. They spent many years traveling around the world and spending many summers at Higgins Lake which they enjoyed with their grandchildren and great grand children. He was a member of the Detroit District Dental Society, the Michigan Dental Society, the American Dental Society, as well as the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Club of Royal Oak and Traverse City. He was an avid boater and he could be seen driving his classic Chris Craft, Schatzi, over Higgins Lake many times at dusk. Even though he had troubled times as an adult, he overcame this and continued to be the caring, generous person we will miss. He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (2011)and his daughter Laura (1991) He will be missed by his son Fred (Deborah), grandchildren Matt Cushman (Kelly), Emily Hunter (Neil), Grant (Lydia), Jonathan, Ellen Phillips (Chris), great grand children Hailey Hunter, Olivia Cushman, Parker Phillips, and Lorelei Stoye, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make contribution to the Higgins Lake Foundation.
