Garnet Athlea Scamehorn
Garnet was born December 15, 1922 in Lawrenceville, Illinois to Golden and Bessie (Swensen) Land, the oldest of six children. On October 21, 1945, she married Robert Scamehorn of Williamsburg, Michigan who preceded her in death in 2003. They lived on air bases in Illinois and Colorado before moving back to Traverse City and settling on South Civic Center Drive. Garnet worked as a switch board operator for Illinois Bell, Michigan Bell, Munson Medical Center, and the State Hospital.
Garnet's hobbies included gardening roses and edelweiss, and writing fiction for young adults. Garnet and Robert were well known in the area for walking their dogs around the civic center daily. She was also well known for writing letters to the editor of the Record Eagle, and for working tirelessly on issues that were important to her.
Garnet spent the last four years at Grand Traverse Pavilions, where she made many new friends, and received wonderful care.
Garnet is survived by their only daughter, Roberta Boone, and granddaughter Becky Wheelock of Traverse City, grandson Brian Boone of Grawn, as well as 10 beloved great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Lawrence Land of Vincennes, Indiana.
The family is planning a celebration of her life later in the spring. Memorials may be made in her name to the Cherryland Humane Society, in honor of her life-long love of animals.
