Traverse City - Gary Franklin Hanna, 69, life long resident of Traverse City passed away March 23, 2017 at Munson Medical Center.
Gary was born on September 16, 1947 in Traverse City to the late Joseph and Amelita (Phillips) Hanna. He was one of ten children.
Gary served his country honorably as a member of the United States Air Force. He served from 1974 - 1978. While stationed in Spain, he taught himself Spanish. In his later years, he enjoyed talking in Spanish with his grandsons as they were learning it in school.
On October 19, 1985 Gary married Gloria Lynn Hedlund. They were set up on a blind date and fell in love at first sight.
Gary earned his associates degree from Northwestern Michigan College and had a variety of jobs throughout his life.
In his free time he enjoyed gardening, tending to his yard and caring for his neighbors property as well. He was very friendly and had a smile for everyone he met. He loved to read, especially non fiction. Gary was a huge Beatles fan and loved to play the guitar. He even named his beloved daughter after one of his favorite songs - "Michelle, ma belle". He was a family man and loved sharing jokes with his grandsons. He was a cancer survivor and while recovering, he wore fun wigs and hats to make his family smile. He will be greatly missed.
Gary is survived by his wife Gloria; daughter Michelle (John) Jaquish; grandsons John and Jim Jaquish, siblings George, Paul, Martin, Carl, Jeff, Opal, Debbie, and Pam; step-mom Flangie Hanna and many nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his brother Joe.
The family will celebrate his life privately.
Gary loved animals, especially kittens. In honor of his memory, memorial contributions may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society.
