Gary M. Wittig

Gary Michael Wittig, born on October 10th, 1950 passed away peacefully at his home on April 24th, 2023, at the age of 72. He is survived by his son Gary, daughter Michelle Lawrence (Jon), grandchildren Megan and Andrew, brother Marvin, nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends and neighbors. Preceded in death by his wife Marcia (Smith) and parents Margaret (Wilson) and Marvin Sr.
Gary made the most of his time after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in 2021. Believing life was a gift, he enjoyed every day to his last with his characteristic dry sense of humor and steadfast sense of purpose. A faithful Christian, he looked forward to reuniting with his beloved wife Marcia in heaven.
Gary lived to golf! He loved to play, watch and even recount past rounds. He enjoyed planning annual summer weekend golf getaways that were always a highlight of the year for him. Since retiring, golf became a year-round adventure, including winters spent in Destin golfing with some of his closest friends.
A graduate of Southfield High School in 1968, Gary spent his career as an appliance salesman at Max's Service in downtown Traverse City, where he shared thoughtful advice with his coworkers, who he loved like family and with customers, who he treated like family. He had a knack for making everyone feel at ease, was always willing to lend an ear or quietly come to your aid. He was a generous soul who had everyone's back.
Throughout his journey with cancer, Gary remained positive and always put others first. His family wishes to extend special thanks to his cancer team, Munson Hospice and the staff on Munson's 5-West for their kindness and care.
Gary's passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy will be cherished by his family, friends, and community for years to come. We will always remember Gary, especially when the sun sets over the bay. Rest in peace, Gary.

A memorial service honoring Gary's life will take place on Monday May 1, 2023 at 11:00am at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00am until the beginning of the service.
