Gene Allan Town

Traverse City-Gene Allan Town, 72, of Traverse City died, Wednesday, June 19, 2013, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born in Muskegon on June 30, 1940, he was the son of the late William Francis and Doris Ethel (Wheeler) Town. On November 4, 1961, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Conklin, he married his sweetheart the former Beverly J. Finkler.

Gene proudly served his country with the United States Air Force, before he was honorably discharged. He and his family moved to Traverse City in 1974, from Fruitport.. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Traverse City Eagles Club #313 and the Cone Drive Gear Quarter Century Club.

He was an avid outdoorsmen who also enjoyed playing cards and riding his motorcycle.

Raising six children, the Town's home proved to be the center point and gathering place for their many friends. Gene and his wife were always respected and looked up to by the friends of their children. Everyone was always welcomed in their home.

Gene was a staunch supporter and enjoyed watching his grandchildren during sporting events. He was always there for them.

He was employed by Cone Drive Gear from 1973 to 1999, where he worked as a machine repairman. He certainly enjoyed his work and the friendships he developed with his co-workers.

Gene was a man of strong convictions, determination, perseverance and was truly dedicated to his strong beliefs.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Beverly J. Town, of Traverse City; children, Theresa Town, of Alpharetta, GA, Gregory Town, of Lake Ann, Timothy (Kara) Town, of Traverse City, Linda Town, of Traverse City, Christopher (Kim) Town, of Traverse City, and Jennifer Town, of Farmington Hills and her fiancee, Jason McIntosh; his grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as "Poppy", Matt, Steve, Tyler, Kylie, Tia, Devin, Taylor and Brandon; sisters, Donna Stratton and Betty Morse both of Muskegon; along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his siblings,
Gloria Montgomery, Clarence, Ronald, William and Emmet Town.

Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Sunday, June 23, 2013, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with a Scripture Service at 7:30 P.M.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Monday, June 24, 2013, at 11:00 A.M., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Gregory McCallum will serve as the celebrant.

Cremation will follow.

In remembrance of Gene, memorial contribution may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church. Envelopes may be obtained either at the funeral home or church.
