Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Geneva Jewell Avery, of Traverse City, went home to the Lord on Monday morning, Nov. 21, 2011, at Bay Ridge Living Center. Born Feb. 7, 1924, in Union, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Florence Elizabeth (Hornbrook) Gowen. On Dec. 2, 1944, in Capac, she married Dr. James Lester Avery and dedicated her life to providing a loving home for her family. Their long life together took them to many places, including Capac, Marlette, Lapeer, Ft. Myers, Fla., and Aiken, S.C. Geneva had a love for music and spent many hours playing her piano.While living in Marlette, Geneva served as a Pink Lady at Marlette Community Hospital and was a member of the Altrusa Club. During her younger years she served as a Brownie leader. She also volunteered with hospice in Ft. Myers, Fla.She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James L. Avery, of Traverse City; children, Alan (Mary) Avery, of Ft. Myers, Fla., Anita (Tom) Fisher, of Lapeer, and Mark (Mary Anne) Avery, of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, Amy (Andrew) Durden, April (Justin) Brown, Todd (Wendy) Fisher, Julie (Shane) Berns, David (Krystal) Fisher, Alex (Sara) Avery and Spencer Avery; six great-grandchildren, Reece, Emily, Logan, Amelia, Breckyn and Kadence; and many loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Lori Gilbert for her love and kindness and all the people at Bay Ridge Living Center for their caring, compassion and support.Cremation has taken place.
