Traverse City - George Bell Jr., 89, passed away, December 15, 2013. George was born in Owosso, Michigan on June 19, 1924, to the late George W. and Anna (Lewis) Bell. He graduated from Owosso High School and attended University of Michigan and then earned a mechanical engineering degree from Michigan State University. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Senior Machinist Mate Third Class and was a veteran of WW II.
He worked for Fisher & Wright, Inc. in Flint, serving as the Vice President and estimating engineer for 39 years as well as being on the Local 370 Pension Fund and Apprenticeship Board. Upon retiring, he and Geri relocated to Interlochen in 1991, where he had built a summer home on Green Lake in the 1956. George was a member of The Presbyterian Church, and a member of the NW Michigan Woodcarving Guide; he especially enjoyed bicycling and was a supporter of the TART Trail Association. George was a life-long builder, whether toys for grandchildren or remodeling homes. He was named the Habitat Volunteer of the Year in Traverse City in the late 1990s.
He and Geri were always active together. They bicycled throughout Europe and enjoyed the baked goods along the way. They played tennis and golfed, bridge with friends, and were active volunteers at the Interlochen Library.
George married his wife, Geraldine L Corning on July 12, 1952 in Flint, MI., and celebrated 61years of marriage, and raised two sons.
He is survived by his wife; Geraldine, sons; Gregory W. (Ronna Jane) Bell of Seattle, WA., Geoffrey M. Bell, of Naples, FL, sister; Louva (Jack) Buehler, of Vista, CA, grandchildren; Graham W. Bell, Reilley H. Bell, Zoë A. Bell.
George is preceded in death by his parents; sisters; Ruth E. Warner, Mary Ann Marty.
A memorial service will be held 10:30AM on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
