Obituary

George Edmund Chisholm, 95, a 45-year resident of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 31, 2025, surrounded by loving family members.

George was born January 15, 1930, in Brownfield, Texas, to Henry and Lily Chisholm, and grew up on a West Texas farm. He married Mary Tankersley in Brownfield on July 25, 1949. Their marriage lasted 63 years, until Mary moved on to Heaven; his faithful love for her, however, lasted 76 years. George leaves behind two sisters, Mary Chisholm Smith and Martha Taylor; four children: Mikee Chisholm Delony (Bob), Bob Chisholm (Pam), Tom Chisholm (Veneita), and Kimberly Chisholm Neinhouse (Greg); 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He started his professional career with Shell Oil Company in the early 1950s as a "roustabout" at a gasoline plant in Denver City, Texas. Over the next 36 years, he rose through the ranks of the company, working at various plants in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and Michigan retiring in a supervisor role in 1987. However, when George retired, he didn't stop working; he just shifted his focus to the Traverse City Church of Christ's involvement in Ghana, West Africa missions.

The Traverse City Church of Christ was involved in missions in Ghana during the 1980s, with a special focus on helping those without access to clean water, Village of Hope homes for destitute children, and supporter of the Heritage Christian University. After retiring, George turned his focus toward the Lord's work in Ghana, Africa, and he supported this work for the rest of his life. He leaves behind a legacy that continues to share the Gospel among the people of Ghana.

George lived a life dedicated to caring for others both inside and outside his family. He put his faith in God first throughout his life, giving generously, offering his time, labor, wisdom, and resources to those in need, providing advice, assistance, and actively participating in his church. He chose to live his life quietly and humbly, giving all credit to Jesus Christ.

Dad, Grandad, Great-Grandad: You ran the race well. Even though you have passed on from this life to eternity, may we all take consolation in the fact that your faith and life of love for missions still remains as a testament to your pleasing God. You are home with the Lord Jesus Christ, to receive your everlasting reward. Glory be to God!

A memorial service will be held at the Traverse City Church of Christ, 3250 Rennie St, Traverse City, MI 49684 on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Afterwards George will be laid to rest beside Mary at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, 3575 Veterans Dr., Traverse City, MI 49684.
